New Speed Limits Approved

AllTrain: New Speed Limits Approved

Drivers travelling through parts of Manawatū and Horowhenua will soon see new speed limits introduced across several sections of the state highway network.

Changes like these are a good reminder that safe driving isn’t just about knowing how to handle your car. It’s about staying alert, keeping an eye on what's ahead, and adjusting your driving to fit the conditions around you.

Speed Limits Approved for Manawatū & Horowhenua State Highways

The approved changes include:

  • SH56 Longburn to Palmerston North: 80km/h

  • SH56 Longburn village: 60km/h

  • SH56 / Te Wanaka Road intersection: Variable 60km/h limit

  • SH57 Kimberley Road: 80km/h

  • SH1 Ōhau to Manakau: 80km/h

  • SH1 Wehi Wehi Marae: Variable 60km/h limit

  • SH1 Tukorehe Marae: Variable 60km/h limit

  • SH1 Foxton South: 50km/h, already in place

  • SH1 Levin South: 50km/h, already in place

Work is underway to introduce the remaining changes. Until the new signs are installed, the current posted speed limits still apply.

What does this mean for drivers?

If you regularly travel these routes, it is important to keep an eye on the signs rather than driving from memory. Familiar roads can be where we become most comfortable, and that can make it easier to miss a change in speed limit or road conditions.

Variable speed limits around intersections and marae are also worth paying close attention to. These limits are designed to slow traffic when additional care is needed, so drivers should always follow the speed shown on the electronic signs when they are active.
