Note: Attendees are expected to provide their own HIAB for practical assessment where possible. A crane can be arranged for an additional cost. On-site pricing varies by attendee numbers and location. Additional travel charges may apply.


Tutor Credentials:

Training is delivered by experienced instructors with practical lifting industry knowledge. NZQA assessment and credits are completed where required.

About This Course

This NZQA-recognised course is designed for people who need to safely operate a truck mounted crane for regular lifting tasks. Training combines theory and practical assessment using workplace-based lifting scenarios. The course covers crane setup, load movement, hazard management, transport mode preparation, and operator maintenance to help participants meet industry expectations.

Theory

  • Hazards associated with HIAB crane operation

  • Lift planning and hazard controls

  • Operator responsibilities and authorisation requirements

  • Pre-start checks and fault reporting

  • Truck loader crane components and attachments

  • Safe use of slings, chains, hooks, spreaders, pallet forks, grabs, and lifting gear

  • Load limits, stability, and crane capacity awareness

  • Recognised crane hand signals and communication methods

Practical

  • Positioning and levelling the truck safely

  • Using stabilisers, plates, and packing correctly

  • Setting up the HIAB crane for lifting operations

  • Slinging, lifting, moving, unloading, and placing regular loads

  • Assessing load stability during movement

  • Operating crane controls safely

  • Stowing crane for road transport mode

  • Completing documentation and reporting defects

  • Daily and weekly maintenance checks

Important to Know

  • You must have completed Unit Standard 30072 or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills before attending

  • Proof of prerequisite competency and logbook evidence may be required

  • Students must hold a Full NZ Driver Licence

  • All cranes and lifting gear used must be in safe working condition with current certification

  • This includes slings, chains, lift bars, and associated equipment

  • Refresher training is also available

  • Suitable PPE including steel cap boots and hi-vis clothing is recommended
