When can you get your next licence?

AllTrain: car licence eligibility calculator

Working towards your restricted or full car licence? With changes to New Zealand’s driver licensing system coming on 25 January 2027, you might be wondering what they mean for your next step.

NZTA’s car licence eligibility calculator can help you understand where you are in the licensing system and whether the changes will affect when you can move forward.

Check your timing

It can be tricky to work out how licensing changes apply to your own situation. The calculator gives you a starting point, whether you’re planning ahead for yourself or helping a family member through the process. Head to the NZTA website, follow the prompts and read the guidance provided for your circumstances.

Make a plan

Once you understand your timing, think about how you’ll use the weeks or months ahead. For learner drivers, regular supervised practice is a good place to start. Talk with your supervisor about the situations you find challenging and make time to work on them together. That might include approaching intersections, choosing safe gaps or managing your speed in different conditions. Keep track of anything you’re unsure about so you can discuss it with a driving instructor. Having a clear focus can make each practice session more useful. Being eligible for the next licence stage is one part of the picture. Feeling prepared behind the wheel matters too.

At AllTrain, our Learner Driver Training helps drivers in Palmerston North and Feilding develop their skills in a supportive environment. Lessons are structured around your experience, progress and the areas where you need more practice.

Keep informed

Whether you’re building confidence or preparing for your restricted test, we can help you identify what to work on next. Start by checking your timing with the NZTA eligibility calculator, then get in touch when you’re ready to plan your Learner Driver Training.
